Intraoral Attachment Clip for Attachment of Objects to Edentulous Ridges

One of the methods of implant placement in the dental field is through surgical navigation systems. A navigation system is a system that provides real-time tracking of the drill and implant position and orientation during placement on images acquired pre-surgically. It requires registration of the surgical anatomy with its corresponding positions on the images. One way of registration is through the use of fiducial markers placed near the surgical field during imaging and surgery. The fiducials are placed during radiographic imaging and during the surgical procedure to allow registration of the position of the jaw in the surgical field to the position within the images. The fiducial markers are also necessary for tracking of the position of the drill in relation to the jaw. We propose an attachment mechanism comprised of a small clip made of a radiolucent, flexible material to allow its adaptation to the edentulous ridge. The clip would be positioned such that it’s tissue surface is attached to the facial, crestal, and lingual mucosa overlying the edentulous ridge, and the fiducial markers would be attached to its oral surface. The clip would be stabilized on the oral mucosa through micro-projections on the tissue-surface of the clip, covered with an adhesive material compatible with the oral mucosa. The adhesive material would allow firm attachment of the clip to the mucosa, and would be dissolved by application of another material to the adhesive in order to allow the clip to be remove with minimum trauma to the mucosa. The advantages of this attachment mechanism compared to currently existing mechanisms are that it is much less invasive; does not require removal in the time interval between imaging and surgery; and is of a smaller size. These advantages are expected to make this attachment mechanism more comfortable for the patient and surgeon and less likely to cause inaccuracies in position between the imaging and surgical visits.
